Here is a 3D sketch of a penthouse apartment renovation that looked at utilising the existing deck to improve the planning and function of the internal spaces.
The proposal was to relocate a laundry from a north facing location to a deep, internalised space. This space could then be extended and converted to a home office with views to King Lake and a connection to the existing deck.
The living room was to have a sunroom added with a new pergola adjacent to create a covered outdoor kitchen / dining area. This would provide a frame for plants to grow and both sunroom and pergola would help to mitigate the summer temperatures. The sunroom would also help warm the living spaces in winter.
The challenges of this project got us thinking about the flexibility of apartment properties.
The physical, body corporate and title structures make it much more difficult for this type of housing to be customised to suit different home-owner’s needs or to improve the unit’s thermal performance.
